Whether youve just a day or two for visiting the scenic Gauja Valley and the historic centre of Cēsis, or whether you plan a longer stay, youll find our district has an immense number of attractions, with the widest range of accommodation and recreational activities.
Our land is one of hills and lakes, with log-built farms secluded between the woods and small fields. The knights and barons invariably chose the most beautiful spots for their castles and manor-houses, so the scenery and the monuments blend together. Places such as Āraiši, Unguri and Rauna have whole clusters of prehistoric and historic sites within a picturesque landscape.
Cutting through the district is the deep Gauja Valley: a completely different environment, with red sandstone cliffs, caves and springs flowing down shady ravines. The valley is famed for its bird-cherry blossom in springtime and its bright autumn colours, and is protected within a national park. The historic paper-mill village of Līgatne is the focus of nature trails, introducing the countrys wild mammals in open ranges. To really get to know the river, hire a boat for a downstream ride, stopping at campsites along the way.
